Front elevation boundry fences
If you plan on building a front fence to the front elevation boundry of your property you will need to submit plans of your intention demonstrating location, height, appearance etc.
You will need to contact your council to aquire the applicable requirements allowed to your immediate pocket area in your suburb. The council will supply you with the appropriate information prior to your conceptual ideas of what you are building and drafting of final submission plans which will take some time to approve dependant on the waiting time of plan approval. Your local council may have useful information on their website.
It is in your best interest to have a survey done of property boundry cadastral lines prior to commencement of design which can save a lot of time and money. Quite often boundry points are shifted for a number of reasons.
If you have an extension contemplate a builder or apply for an owner building permit prior to commencement. Carrying out building work requires a lot of your time in administration, supervision and trade aquisition. It is important you consider you have enough time, skill base and energy before contemplating an owner builder licence.
Contact your local council to see whether you require a building licence to carry out the works you intend proceding with prior to any design or consultation.

Retaining walls
Dependent on the council you will require an enginneers detail for retaining walls generally over 500mm in height although this varies from council to council especially if you are located on soils such as clay where special design is needed to prevent failure. Again contact your local council prior to conceptual design to attain their requirements on retaining walls.
